Despite progress in recent years some children in West Bengal still die before their fifth birthday from preventable diseases like measles and tuberculosis.
Some women still die during pregnancy due to childbirth-related complications. Cancer awareness and access to treatment also remain low. As a result unhealthy people are less able to contribute to the development of their communities.
Human Wave aids people with basic healthcare in their communities by providing:
Vaccinations, teeth and eye check-ups and nutrition awareness to reduce preventable deaths and disease amongst newborns and children
Antenatal care, sexual health care and family planning services to reduce maternal mortality and teen pregnancy
Cancer screening and well-being services to reduce adult mortality from non-communicable diseases and substance abuse.
We also support people with more serious diseases to access state healthcare.

WOMEN'S EMPOWERMENT & MICROFINANCE
Tackling early marriage and domestic violence. Empowering women to make financial decisions. Providing job skills for work.
Some women and girls still marry before they are 18 because of social and financial pressure. Some women suffer physical and sexual violence from abusive, alcohol induced partners. Many low-income families - and particularly the women in them - don't have access to financial services because banks see them as high risk. Some women still don't work because they lack in demand job skills or face social pressure to stay at home. All this undermines their fundamental rights to live in safety and enjoy equal access to finance and jobs.

SELF HELP GROUPS
We run self-help groups for women from low-income families throughout our various project areas. We raise awareness on the negative effects on health, education and employment caused by early marriage and domestic violence.
Our trained teachers and volunteers listen to women's problems and give advice on ways to deal with potential violent partners. They also help women to access professional support services if needed.
Our self-help groups have helped many women tackle domestic violence and live happier and safer lives.
MICROFINANCE
We provide loans and savings accounts for low-income families for healthcare, school materials, home improvement or to start a new business.
The woman in the family manage the loan and savings accounts with us. We just take small monthly interest payments on loans, and pay annual interest on savings.
Our microfinance programme helps people improve their standard of living, save for the future and cope financially in difficult times.
