EDUCATION

Supporting early child development. Helping children reach school and stay there. Providing quality primary and secondary education.

Behavioural problems and low-levels of basic reading and maths are common in children from low-income families. This is due to a lack of access and opportunities to public services. This inability  undermines their ability to thrive and prosper in the future.

HEALTH

Reducing child mortality. Improving and maternal health. Reducing teen pregnancy. Detecting diseases.

Despite progress in recent years some children in West Bengal still die before their fifth birthday from preventable diseases like measles and tuberculosis.

Some women still die during pregnancy due to childbirth-related complications. Cancer awareness and access to treatment also remain low. As a result unhealthy people are less able to contribute to the development of their communities.

Human Wave aids people with basic healthcare in their communities by providing:

  • Vaccinations, teeth and eye check-ups and nutrition awareness to reduce preventable deaths and disease amongst newborns and children

  • Antenatal care, sexual health care and family planning services to reduce maternal mortality and teen pregnancy

  • Cancer screening and well-being services to reduce adult mortality from non-communicable diseases and substance abuse.

  • We also support people with more serious diseases to access state healthcare.

WOMEN'S EMPOWERMENT & MICROFINANCE

Tackling early marriage and domestic violence. Empowering women to make financial decisions. Providing job skills for work.

Some women and girls still marry before they are 18 because of social and financial pressure. Some women suffer physical and sexual violence from abusive, alcohol induced partners. Many low-income families - and particularly the women in them - don't have access to financial services because banks see them as high risk. Some women still don't work because they lack in demand job skills or face social pressure to stay at home. All this undermines their fundamental rights to live in safety and enjoy equal access to finance and jobs.

SELF HELP GROUPS

We run self-help groups for women from low-income families throughout our various project areas. We raise awareness on the negative effects on health, education and employment caused by early marriage and domestic violence.

Our trained teachers and volunteers listen to women's problems and give advice on ways to deal with potential violent partners. They also help women to access professional support services if needed.

Our self-help groups have helped many women tackle domestic violence and live happier and safer lives.

Our microfinance programme helps people improve their standard of living, save for the future and cope financially in difficult times.

EMPLOYMENT SKILLS

We teach tailoring and batic print skills to women from project areas. Our trained teachers give weekly sewing, tailoring, dressmaking and batic printing classes.
These classes empower women to start work, be more independent and contribute to the family income by providing beneficial skills.

COMMUNITY INFRASTRUCTURE

Providing clean water, sanitation and street-lighting.

Despite progress, some of the poorest communities in West Bengal still lack regular access to safe drinking water and sanitation. This causes preventable water and sanitation-related diseases and impacts people’s employment opportunities. A lack of public lighting also contributes to accidents and crime and prevents economic activity after sunset.

We provide safe drinking water, public toilets and street lighting for communities that need it. This prevents water and sanitation-related diseases, improves people's employment opportunities and helps reduce crime.

We fund and build infrastructure ourselves and also encourage the local government to provide services on behalf of the communities.
